History of the Hotel Name, Terrible
Believe it or not, the name "Terrible" was applied to company founder Ed Herbst as far back as the 1930s. He opened his first Herbst Oil Company in Chicago in 1937. Even then, Mr. Herbst, a true gentleman in every sense of the word, was famous for his business savvy. He constantly undercut the competition's prices and service time. Amidst the growing popularity of Ed Herbst and his "Service" stations, other station operators were certain that Ed Herbst would corner the market and run them our of town. A small group of station operators huddled around an old wooden table. "He's gonna put us all out of out of business," groaned one. "It's just not a fair thing to do," moaned another. "That no good, terrible... Herbst is gonna run us all out'a town!" And so the name stuck, although it was not officially used until the 1960s. In the 1970s, the company's official slogan, "A whale of a buy!" was replaced with "Mr. Terrible, the best bad guy in the West." Ed "Terrible" Herbst had made a name for himself in the industry. He truly had become the best bad guy in the west.
